Review of the digestive system organs:

1. esophagus = your throat which carries what you swallow down to the stomach.

**Has slippery mucus to slide food with muscular
contractions.

****epiglottis = flab that will separate
         and close the esophagus

2. Stomach = J - shaped organ with gastric juices and the enzyme (pepsin), hydrochloric acid and mucus.

Its a smooth muscle that moves food.

( this becomes chemical digestion )

3. Small intestine = food leaves stomach to the small intestine ( now food is soft/water like ).

Here is where food matter has MOST of its digestion and breaking down into small pieces.

***The juices of the small intestine come mostly from the liver and pancreas.

4. Liver
= located to the right of the stomach, its a "helper" to the small intestine.

Liver produces the substance (bile) ----- *** helps break apart fats and other food substances.

------sends excess bile into a storage tank called
THE GALLBLADDER.

***When a person eats, the gallbladder has a tube connected to the small intestine and sends bile to help break up fat molecules.

5.  The Pancreas = important organ that is found between the stomach and the small intestine.  ( connected into the small intestine )

*** It will produce pancreatic juices to break down proteins, fats and starches.

  The most important juice is
(insulin), which helps control the sugar levels of the body.

6.  Large intestine = after food is absorbed and sent into the blood and body cells, the "left-over" matter becomes wastes.

***The large intestine wraps around the small intestine and takes all the remaining matter and prepares it for being removed from the body.

The matter is then called "feces" and mixes with water from the rectum.

The rectum has an opening called the anus, which takes the wastes outside of the body.

**** Extra important information is that
STD's are a serious issue relating to the
rectum and very dangerous !!!!!!!!!

7.  Appendix = What is it and what is it for?

Mystery of why we have one, but it at one time might have been used by "early-man" as a helper to digest and breakdown leafy/ grassy foods.

It is not needed by current humans and can inflamed or infected ( thus removed )

Summary of the parts of the mouth and throat:

1.  Mouth----contains saliva to help mix with food to "slide" food into the back of throat and swallow, with the help of your tongue.

Taste buds = flavors of food ( sweet, sour, bitter, spicy and salty. )

2.  Teeth = several shapes of our teeth help us break apart and tear food matter.

Some of your teeth are sharp canines to rip and tear food.

The larger and flat molars will crush and break down food into smaller pieces.

Your incisors are the first 8 teeth in the very front of your mouth to first bite food.

3.  Epiglottis = its a small flap at the rear of your mouth and will close over your "windpipe" when eating food.

4.  Trachea = the tube or windpipe that is connected to your lungs and brings air into the right and left lungs from your mouth.

5. Pharynx =  very top of throat and connects both the nasal and mouth cavity to help with breathing and sends air down throat.

6. Larynx = this is the voice box and has within it our "vocal cords."

***Why do men have an "adams apple"?
